Same problem as everyone else, no matter how carefully you place that carafe, it will overflow. And it is very annoying to wake up to a huge mess in all over the kitchen counter in the morning. I hate the thing and am looking for a decent replacement. This is the first time I have ever been disappointed by Mr. Coffee.

...that I have ever bought. Like some of the other reviewers, I've found that the coffee often overflows over the basket resulting in coffee and coffee grounds in the decanter and/or on the counter. When the coffee overflows over the basket, coffee and coffee grounds flow into the well that holds the basket. Unlike past Mr. Coffee models that I've owned, that well has only a nickel-sized hole for the basket's drain and cannot be removed from the main body of the coffeemaker. In addition, the well has some thin crevices into which the coffee and coffee grounds settle. Once that happens the well is almost impossible to clean. The coffeemaker is obviously not immersible, so you have to take the entire coffeemaker over to the sink, turn it on its side, and try your best to direct some water in the well without getting the rest of the coffeemaker wet -- all of which is a royal pain in the arse. As an aside (pun intended), the window to see how much water is in the coffeemaker faces to the right and is not viewable from the front, making it almost useless. DO NOT BUY THIS COFFEEMAKER! I wish i could give it a zero....a one star rating is waaayyyy too high.

I bought this coffee maker. But it has an overflow problem. The area that hold the coffee ground overflows and then send hot coffee and grounds all over your counter and into the coffee pot below (what little actually gets there, most of it was all over the counter) After this mess took place three or four times I called Mr. Coffee they sent me another pot. NOT the same model a Less expensive model. When I called and asked why and they told me it was the replacement model. At that point I didn't care as long as the coffee stayed in the pot and off my counter.

This maker brews coffee fairly quickly and the delayed brew/timer is a nice feature. Unfortunately, about every other time that you make coffee, the basket will overflow. It doesn't seem to matter how carefully you place the basket or the pot in the brewer. Grounds end up in your coffee and all over the counter. If you like cleaning up that sort of thing, get it. If not, spend the extra cash and get a Bunn.

I just tossed my Cuisenart grind-n-brew that I have enjoyed for 6 years and purchased this Mr. Coffee. I appreciate the removeable water resevoir (no more spilling water all over the counter) and the no drip spout on the pot as well as the removeable filter holder that doesn't require that I get coffee grounds all over my fingers to remove the used filter from the pot. It does not grind my beans but neither do I have to clean the grinder parts. All in all its features and the quality of the coffee make the price very reasonable. I look forward to using this coffee maker for another 5 - 6 years.

I purchased this coffee maker about 2-3 months ago. It stopped working yesterday morning so I took it back to where I purchased it and brought home a new one exactly like it. I ran it through it's first cycle and it did fine. This morning I'm really disappointed because it would not work at all, the clocked was the only thing that worked and I wanted a coffee maker with a timer so It would be ready when I get up in the morning..So you can see I am very disappointed with this product. Next time I am definitely changing brands.No coffee in the morning means a bad day for me....

I have read all these reviews and I agree with most of them. I thought something was wrong with just mine but most people have the same issues........leaks. Couldn't really ever figure out if it was one leak or two but keeping a towel under the coffee maker is just too much of a mess. Also, I agree with the person who wrote about having to pull the coffee maker out from under the the cabinet to pour water in. Too much drama. Oh well, Mr. Coffee, it seemed like a good idea at the time I guess. Very sad that it didn't work out.

1. The black ink that describes the tiny buttons have poor contrast against the chrome.
2. You have to pull it away from the counter to pour in the water.
3. It has a beeper that disturbs the whole house. Did they think we welcome yet another annoyance from an appliance that reprimands us that it has some function to fulfill?
4. The buttons have poor tactile response. Why not just have a few big buttons or knobs that can be read with bleary eyes BEFORE the first cup of coffee?
I wouldn't recommend this product or this company to anyone.

This coffeemaker's design is flawed. But my customer service experience on complaining about it was the best I've received from any company in years. They sent their new thermal carafe model, which appears to have the design flaw with the filter carrier taken care of. Give them a chance to make it right. Customer service is part of the equation with any purchase, and Mr. Coffee/Sunbeam has impressed me on that score.

I've had mine for about a year and a half and have hated it most of this time. It would work ok for a while, but then it would proceed to flood my kitchen with coffee pouring out of the bottom of the machine. This has happened on multiple occasions. I tracked down the problem and it is an issue with the poor design of the drip lip that sends the coffee into the carafe as it is brewed. I got a new one because I can't stand cleaning up the messes anymore.

I had to replace my Space Saver B&D on a sunday morning. I wanted another thermal carafe model but wasn't realy ready to shell out $80 for the Braun even witht the good reviews. I found this on clearance at Target for $35 and I bought a Cuisinart gold filter for it. I did not like the fact the Mr Coffee filter had a solid bottom to the gold filter. Anways, there is not much I can say bad about this machine.
Things I like: looks,brew seletor,self clean feature,makes good coffee,the carafe is one the best I have used. The easy change water filter disks are a nice feature as well, inexpensive and work pretty well. I dont have any of the leak problems. Things I would change: could make coffee a little hotter but not a deal breaker,the unit beeps 5 times when finished brewing not a big deal when everyone is up and moving but I tend to set it to go on before the family is up. Overall for what I paid for this I'm very pleased.

I bought the coffeemaker thinking that it would be a decent product for the price. It looks good and it has a nice feature set but beyond its aesthetics and functionality this thing is very cheap!
The main issues I experienced were as follows:
1) It leaked. And I don't mean a little dribble here and there; it created puddles. See the other reviews.
2) Within less than a year it started to randomly stop during the brew process, almost as if it thought it was done. The unit almost became completely useless.
3) The coffee maker tainted the coffee with the great taste of plastic. As a person that really likes a good cup of coffee, this might have been the worst offense. Of course a coffeemaker should at least work.
4) The amount of steam that escaped seemed unusual. The finished brew was always short by about a cup or two.
5) The heating plate worked but didn't keep the coffee hot.

I am real suprised to see negative reviews on this maker. I have had nothing but really good coffee from it. Really like the water filter. Although it will need to be replaced after about 30 pots. As it will affect the taste of your coffee when it has been used up. That is the only downside that I can see, if you really want to consider that a downswide. I have finally stared making coffee at home again, since recieving it for Christmas. I really love the regular or strong option. As I like my coffee strong. In my opinion this a great value for the money. Hope this helps.

Great coffee maker...very easy to use. The only down side is the white on the top of the lid to the pot will obviously get stained with coffee, but that is to be expected. Very quick to brew, and it is great to be able to pour a cup while it is still brewing. Definetely would get another...maybe a darker one next time.

This has got to be the absolute worst coffee maker ever produced. We have this unit only two months, water leaks out the back, steam leaks up through the top lid. It's like a little Chernobyl.
Pour six cups of water in and you're lucky to get out four cups.
This is the second one we've tried, thinking the last one was just a bad unit -- but it wasn't.
This is a true, genuine piece of junk! DO NOT waste your money on this!

I'm on my third coffee pot in one year of this model. The First two were exchanged. This one will be going into the trash. Received as a wedding gift. Returned the first on because it didn't keep coffee hot, the second one over heated and damaged the base of the pot. NOW THIS ONE, shuts off after making one cup and does not continue to make any more coffee. I have to shut it off and restart it 8 times before it will make 10 cups of coffee.

Bought this coffee maker in May of this year and as of yesterday it is toast. You pour water into the coffee maker and it comes out the bottom. I cannot believe this coffee maker only lasted this length of time. I used it once a day for approximately 5 months. I can say that I called the web site for Mr Coffee at 1-800-672-6333 and they are sending me a new coffee maker in 6-8 days. After reading the reviews, I wonder how long my second coffee maker will last. Good luck to anyone that buys this model.

Husband and I had an earlier version of this coffee maker that lasted for 2 years. The device that lets you remove the carafe while brewing stopped working after I removed the basket to clean it. A few months later, the water pump broke.
Since the carafe was still usable, I decided to buy the FTX45-1, it being similar to the old one. (The old carafe would be a spare should this one's break.)
After just two weeks of using the pot to brew only water, the pump broke. The same problem the other reviewers have mentioned. The water gets hot, a tiny bit spurts out, and the pot dings that all is done. Even restarting the machine and letting it run for an hour produces no better results.
It's bad enough having to buy a new coffee maker every year or so because of poor workmanship. It's another to pay $50 for one that breaks in just a couple of weeks. I agree with the reviewer who said the product needs to be recalled.

We have had nothing but trouble with this pot since it entered our house 6 months ago. The water reservoir is located in the rear and there is a very small area to actually pour the water into, very bad design!
The brew pot is constantly over flowing with grounds spilling down into the pot, and now the plastic piece that stops the coffee from flowing down while it's dripping has broken. I would not recommend this pot!

I have the answer why the FTX45-1 stops brewing before it is done! The check valve in the hose is bad. It's the lump at the end of the hose that connects to the water tank. It does not let the water flow properly into the heating element and the water steams furiously and the thermostat shuts off the coffee maker. And yes I cleaned it over and over! Mr. Coffee needs to do a RECALL to repair them all!!! Better yet an exchange program where Mr Coffee is sold! I emailed them and told them. I would be happy just to get a new improved check valve. The coffee maker has those goofy screws on the bottom to keep us out. I used a small screw driver and got them unscrewed. [...]

I recently purchased this coffee maker because of the design, features and espacially the Mr. Coffee name. I'm tremendously dissapointed in it for the following reasons. It's poorly designed. After using it and you lift the lid to remove then basket, the condesation on the inside of the lid drips down the back of the unit and pools on the countertop. It's also impossible to completly empty the pot and there's always some left in the bottom of it. Another problem with it is that you cannot insert your hand into the pot, with a dish cloth, to wash the dried residue out of the pot. I had to use a set of tongs to clean it. Another feature that made me purchase it was the charcoal filter included. This I quickly found was impratical to use. You have to play with the paper filter in order for it to sit correctly on the basket.
If I hadn't discarded the box in came in I would be returning it to get my money back.

I have recently spent enough money on coffee makers to have purchased the top of the line more than once. The Cuisinart machine was badly designed making it impossible to pour without spilling. The Black and Decker brewing cycle took forever. My last Chinese wonder constantly spilled over the filter holding the coffee making a big mess and coffee grounds in the coffee. Finally, living where there is not much choice, I bought this coffee maker even though I did not like the design....too big and the chrome front too shiny. I love this machine! It is easy to program, easy to fill, brews quickly and pours perfectly. It even beeps to tell you the brewing cycle is complete. It does it all and is inexpensive.

After using this coffee maker for a relatively short time (2 yrs. or less) it conked out on Christmas day. Maybe it's just as well as I have been unhappy with the design of the pot (water condenses on the cover and drips on the counter every time you go to pour a cup) and the coffee basket also drips all over the counter when you swing it out to refill with grounds. The two hour hot plate cutoff may be good for safety but if you forget to reset it, you end up with cold coffee in the middle of the moring. Cause of death appears to be the temperature sensor switch components and research tells me that parts are next to impossible to obtain and that the best solution is to junk it and replace. Needless to say, the replacement will not be Mr. Coffee!

We bought this under a year ago, and already it's a mess. We have a rubberband holding the filter basket because it would move during brewing and would leak everywhere. We can't pour a cup of coffee without the carafe dripping on the counter.
It does, however, make a very good and hot cup of coffee, but with a two hour cut off switch, we constanly have cold coffee.
The timer is very easy to set, so I always have hot coffee when I awake.

I had this Mr. Coffee model for about a year before it stopped working. So - silly me - I went and bought a similar one to replace it. It stopped working after 2 months. It STARTS to brew, then prematurely stops. I think it has something to do with crappy electronics in the faceplate. Mr. Coffee coffeemakers are not what they used to be. And this model is a piece of junk, in my humble opinion. BEWARE!

We have had two of these coffee makers. The first died a year after purchase. I wrote to them, and they replaced it. The replacement was obviously a reconditioned unit (or possibly a return) as it was poorly packaged. We have had the same issues that other reviewers have noted...leaking, slow brewing. One thing that we find VERY irritating is the beeping. It beeps 3 times when it's done brewing. It beeps when it shuts off. It beeps when it's done cleaning. All of the beeping is annoying! Trust me when I say it WILL wake up the whole house! The adjustable warmer is worthless. We don't want *warm* coffee, and even on the hottest setting, we have to nuke each cup. If you want a pretty coffee maker, this is pretty. If you want a reliable coffee maker that makes hot coffee, quickly and cleanly, don't buy this one.

I am on my 2nd one of this coffee maker. it leaks from the bottom, but worst of all the coffee tastes and smells like burning plastic! Has anyone else had this problem? I had the first one replaced by calling customer service at Mr. Coffee but the same problem occured.

I've had a lot of automatic and manual coffeemakers and this one is the best, yet. The designers made a lot of good upgrades: a better non-drip trap while you remove the pot during brewing, easier to program, and what appears to be more durable buttons and Teflon (but we won't know how well they last for a while). Nice design. Looks good on the counter.

I rec'd this on May 7th '08 and it stopped working on May 18th '08. I think the thermastat is stuck, because it won't quit heating. The water is at a constant boil. Wouldn't buy this product again.

I have been looking for a coffee pot to replace our old one for awhile now. Didn't want to spend alot but wanted coffee fast. I didn't want the clock and other settings and that was hard to find. Very simple. You swich the top from brew to fill, add water, put the pot back in and switch it back to brew. Gravity does the rest. It is very fast. The coffee comes out so hot that we don't even turn on the warmer for the morning pot. The only thing to consider is that it is a very tall coffee maker. You have to pull it out to add water and with the reservoir, the maker can be very heavy. This was resolved with felt feet. Would I buy it again even at a higher price......most certainly.

Lasted 5 months. Was great while it lasted, but I don't want to replace my coffee maker every 3-5 months. Seems from other reviews, I'm not alone. Internal switch that releases the water quit working and there is no way to get into the machine where the switch is to repair it without completely destroying it. It's probably a simple fix if you could actually get to it, but it's not possible. I tried.

This is the second coffee maker I have purchased. The original one died by not allowing water to pass through...figured something disconnected, but not able to fix it. So, because I enjoyed the fast brew time I thought it was worth another try...WRONG...second machine just turned off one day never to turn back on! It wasn't even a month old. Melitta needs to improve this item or just bury it and be done with it. NOT HAPPY AT ALL.
